These are tough times for cultural institutions everywhere. When budgets need to be trimmed the arts often held up as an unnecessary elitist luxury item. However, the truth is exactly the opposite – art and music are cultural assets that are essential in a thriving society. This was immediately apparent during covid when Washington state included musicians as essential workers so that the Seattle Symphony could continue playing and streaming live concerts. In good times and bad we turn to the arts to be together with others, for inspiration, restoration, and to be uplifted in ways we cannot achieve alone.
Moments when funding for culture is on the chopping block are an opportunity for cities to think strategically about their cultural identity and how it intersects with other long-term goals. The creative sector is an economic engine not to be underestimated. It helps cities attract and retain talent thereby supporting local businesses.
